History
At Maidwell Primary School we have a two-year rolling programme of topics at Key Stage 1 and four year rolling programme of topics at Key Stage 2.
As in other subject areas, the language of History is key and, as such, assessments of vocabulary using a Never Heard the Word Grid is made at the outset of each unit.
Time is taken learning historic terms and a further assessment of NHTWG is made at the end of each unit.
Historic stories support the children’s knowledge and allow children the opportunity to write independently practising skills taught through the Talk for Writing process.
Examples: Sir Francis Drake: Pirate (Tudors), The Great Fire of London (Stuarts), Enemy of the State (Ancient Greeks).
To reinforce reading fluency and comprehension skills, children regularly read information texts pertaining to the particular historic knowledge being taught.
Cross Curricular Writing
There are many opportunities over the course of the year or the children to practise the skills taught through the Talk for Writing process in their History work.
WOW Days
We also support the history curriculum by having speical days. Some of these may be visits out, such as to the museum in Warwick
to support Victorians, also days in, such as Class 1 Victorian day.
Days linked to other curriculum areas, such as the up-and- coming Art/DT day, which will link to/and support KS2's work on Egyptians.
