Anti-bullying, Behaviour & Discipline

The school has a clear, consistent and positive approach to behaviour management based on Golden Rules, which are displayed around the school.

At Maidwell Primary School we believe that the most effective form of discipline is ‘self-discipline’ and through our approach we aim to enable all the children to make the correct choices about how to behave appropriately. If children choose to behave inappropriately there are agreed consequences to remind the children of our expectations.

Please see our Policies area for our Anti-Bullying Policy, Behaviour Policy and other related documents.

Further information and support is also possible from the Anti-Bullying Alliance who are a coalition of organisations and individuals that are united against bullying.

Assessment and Attainment

We believe that the purpose of assessment is to raise attainment, not merely to measure standards.

Promoting and improving children’s learning is a principal aim of Maidwell Primary School, and staff are continually assessing children’s learning, using a variety of techniques and tools, from simple questioning to more formal written tests.

Pupils undertake SATs at the end of Key Stage 2 in Year 6.

Pupils also undertake regular assessments in all other years. The outcomes of these, and teacher observations, are recorded on the school’s internal tracking system and the information used to plan next steps of teaching and identify areas of concern.

There are two formal occasions during the academic year when Parents' Evenings are held. These occur in the Autumn and Spring Terms. During their consultation parents have the opportunity to discuss with the teacher their child’s progress and share any concerns they might have.

Parents are welcome to make appointments, to see their child’s teacher to discuss any aspect of their child’s progress. The class teacher has pastoral responsibility for your child and it is important that you discuss with them any concerns or worries you may have regarding your child’s general well-being in school.

All pupils in Years 1-6 take home an Annual Report at the end of each academic year, detailing information on progress and attainment across the year. Parents of children in the Reception Year will receive a similar report based on attainment and progress in the Foundation Stage Curriculum. Parents are then welcome to make an appointment if they wish to discuss their child's report.

British Values

At Maidwell Primary School we are committed to serving our community and we recognise that our community is multi-cultural and multi-faith. We understand the vital role we play in ensuring that groups and individuals within the school are not subject to intimidation or radicalisation by those wishing to unduly or illegally, influence them.

We believe in equal opportunities which guarantee that there will be no discrimination against any individual or group, regardless of faith, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, political or financial status or similar.

We are dedicated to preparing students for their adult life beyond the formally examined curriculum by ensuring that we promote and reinforce Fundamental British Values to all our children.

The Government emphasises that schools are required to ensure that key British Values are taught in all schools:

The five key Fundamental British Values are:

  • Democracy
  • The Rule of Law
  • Individual Liberty
  • Mutual Respect
  • Tolerance of different faiths and beliefs

We use a number of strategies for including British Values in our teaching:

Democracy

The principle of democracy is always reinforced at Maidwell with democratic processes being used for important decisions across the school community whilst the  principle of democracy is explored in History as well as in assemblies and our Class 3 sessions with 'Magistrates in the Community'.

The Rule of Law

The importance of laws, whether they are those which govern the class, the school or the country, are consistently reinforced within our school.

Children are taught the rules and expectations of the school which are highlighted by school behaviour expectations and the school behaviour policy.

Individual Liberty

Children are actively encouraged to make independent choices, with the knowledge that they are in a safe, secure and supportive environment. All our staff provide boundaries for children to make informed decisions through a safe environment: we have a robust, anti-bullying culture and a comprehensive Behaviour Policy.

Mutual Respect

All members of our school community are expected to treat each other with respect and this is reiterated through both our teaching and our learning environments.

Mutual respect is embraced throughout the school by providing the opportunity for students to express their views in a safe environment.

Tolerance of different faiths and beliefs

Tolerance for all is achieved through educating our children about their place in a culturally diverse society and by giving opportunities to understand such diversity within our school community and beyond.

Charging and Remissions

We are keen to provide activities and experiences to enhance and enrich the curriculum wherever possible.

For certain activities we may request a voluntary contribution. No child will be excluded from such an opportunity for financial reasons.

The school may request a contribution towards the cost of ingredients or material where the finished article is to be taken home, such as products made in art, design and technology lessons.

Peripatetic music tuition is subsidised by the LA. However, in order to increase the range of instrument tuition available to pupils, parents are required to meet the additional cost of lessons.

Please remember that all sessions charged by the school (Get Outside Club & Breakfast Club) require a FULL TERM'S NOTICE (i.e two half terms) when wishing to finish the session / activity.

Sessions / activities provided by a third party (i.e. NMPAT, Freestyle) also have notice periods. Please ask for details if these periods have not been notified to you. These sessions / activities may also incur costs to be met by parents.

Where a pupil has caused ‘wilful damage’ to school property, parents are required to meet the costs of repair or replacement, as appropriate.

See our Policies area for our Charging & Remissions policy and other related documents.

We believe that children need to develop an awareness and understanding of the multi-cultural, multi-faith diverse society in which we live. Public Sector Equality Duty & Equalities Objectives

At Maidwell Primary School, we are committed to comply with the public sector equality duty to ensure that we:

  • Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation and other conduct prohibited by the Act.
  • Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.
  • Foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.
  • Consult and involve those affected by inequality in the decisions that we, as a school, take to promote equality and eliminate discrimination.

The school will comply with the public sector equality duty by adhering to the three aims or arms of the general equality duty. The Act explains that having due regard for advancing equality involves:

  • Removing or minimising disadvantages suffered by people due to their protected characteristics.
  • Taking steps to meet the needs of people from protected groups where these are different from the needs of other people.
  • Encouraging people from protected groups to participate in public life or in other activities where their participation is disproportionately low.

At Maidwell Primary School we are committed to ensuring equality of education and opportunity for all pupils, staff, parents and carers receiving services from the school. This is irrespective of race, gender, disability, faith, religion or socio-economic background. We aim to develop a culture of inclusion and diversity in which all those connected to the school feel proud of their identity and are able to participate fully in school life in the following ways:

  • Children will have an increased understanding of diversity of race and multicultural society.
  • Implement strategies which engage boys in learning in accordance with the national agenda.
  • Promote inclusion of children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND); children with SEND meet their individual targets and have high levels of self-esteem.

Our Public Sector Equality Duty Statement (see our Policies area) contains further information on how we work to comply with the Duty and the review cycle of our objectives.

Our Public Sector Equality Duty Statement is reviewed and updated on an annual basis and is dated as such on its front page.  The objectives detailed above are also reviewed and updated at the same time.

Pupil Premium

The number of children included within our Pupil Premium is less than 5 therefore, for GDPR / privacy reasons, our Pupil Premium statement is partially redacted.

However, we do maintain the unredacted statutory Pupil Premium statement in school.

Remote Learning

If your child has to isolate at home due to Covid-19 or other long-term illness then please contact your child's class teacher for advice on remote learning for your child.

Please ensure your child is sufficiently well enough / recovered before asking them to engage in any remote learning.

We use a combination of the following approaches to teach pupils remotely:

  • Live lessons on Natterhub. This approach is for when a whole class / the whole school is engaged in remote learning. At other times we may use Natterhub to facilitate ongoing contact with your child during the day.
  • Recorded teaching (e.g. Oak National Academy lessons, video/audio recordings made by teachers).
  • Printed work packs produced by teachers (e.g. workbooks, worksheets).
  • Textbooks and reading books pupils have at home.
  • Commercially available websites supporting the teaching of specific subjects or areas, including video clips or sequences (e.g. iXL).
  • Long-term project work and/or internet research activities.

Further information regarding our whole school remote learning provision (i.e. during a Covid lockdown) can be seen in the document below.

Sports Premium

Listed below are our most recent Sports Premium statements.

Swimming

Our swimming lessons are on a Tuesday afternoon in the swimming pool at Maidwell Hall. All children from Reception to Year 6 attend swimming lessons throughout the year.

The children walk across to the swimming pool by crossing the road from the lower playground gate directly into the Church yard and then following the path through the Maidwell Hall site.

Whilst using the pool, we have sole use of the pool and changing rooms.

Children need a swimming hat, swimming costume and towel to swim.

Children do not need their own armbands, floats or other swimming aids as these are all provided by the school.

Generally, if children are well enough to attend school then we believe they are well enough to attend their swimming lessons.  However, we appreciate sometimes children may need to miss an isolated lesson as they are recovering from an illness however we would ask that you discuss any longer term problems with a member of staff rather than allowing your child to persistently miss their swimming lessons.

Please also refer to our safety information regarding the wearing of goggles.

The table below shows our swimming outcomes for the previous years. The figures show the percentage of the Year 6 cohort that left MPS that year who achieved the statements:

2022 2023 2024
Can swim competently, confidently and proficiently over 25m. 100% 100% 100%
Can use a range of strokes effectively. 100% 100% 100%
Can perform self rescue. 100% 100% 100%
